In marriage, the wife who remains faithful to the role of maid-servant can
expect blessings from Adonai on her children, her husband and on herself. By
respecting the covering and the covenant before Yehovah, she can affect far
reaching blessings for family and the community into the future.
RUTH
Then she said, "I have
found favor in your sight, my lord, for you have comforted me and
indeed have spoken kindly to your maidservant, though I am not
like one of your maidservants."
Ruth 2:13
Now a certain woman of the
wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your
servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the
LORD; and the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves."
Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the
house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of
oil."Then he said, "Go, borrow vessels at large for yourself from all your
neighbors, even empty vessels; do not get a few. And you shall go in and
shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour out into all these vessels, and
you shall set aside what is full." So she went from him and shut the door behind
her and her sons; they were bringing the vessels to her and she poured.
When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And
he said to her, "There is not one vessel more." And the oil stopped. Then she
came and told the man of God. And he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your
debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest."
2 Kings 4:1-7
The Shunnamite Woman
Now there came a day when
Elisha passed over to Shunem, where there was a prominent woman, and she
persuaded him to eat food. And so it was, as often as he passed by, he turned in
there to eat food. She said to her husband, "Behold now, I perceive that
this is a holy man of God passing by us continually. "Please, let us make a
little walled upper chamber and let us set a bed for him there, and a table and
a chair and a lampstand; and it shall be, when he comes to us, that he
can turn in there." One day he came there and turned in to the upper chamber and
rested. Then he said to Gehazi his servant, "Call this Shunammite." And when he
had called her, she stood before him. He said to him, "Say now to her,
'Behold, you have been careful for us with all this care; what can I do
for you? Would you be spoken for to the king or to the captain of the
army?'" And she answered, "I live among my own people." So he said, "What then
is to be done for her?" And Gehazi answered, "Truly she has no son and her
husband is old."He said, "Call her." When he had called her, she stood in the
doorway. Then he said, "At this season next year you will embrace a son." And
she said, "No, my lord, O man of God, do not lie to your maidservant." The
woman conceived and bore a son at that season the next year, as Elisha had said
to her.

QUESTIONS
Class 20: Responsibility and Servanthood Part 5
The role of the maidservant is to continually SEEK to bless and bring honor to
the Master’s house and the Master’s Name. In TRUTH, the maidservant who despises
the head of the house or disrespects that man will bring shame and misery and
pain on her own head. It makes NO SENSE to act on those feelings because YHVH
says they are NOT APPRPOPRIATE. Read the passage of the Shunnamite woman 2 Kings
4:8-17
• What does the SCRIPTURE tell us about the REASON the woman troubled her
elderly husband to take the time and energy to build a furnished room for the
prophet?
• What does the SCRIPTURE tell us is the REASON the man agreed to the time, the
energy, and the expense of building this very comfortable room for
Elisha..especially amazing since we are told that they had NO sons to even help
the man with tall that work.
• Discuss the role of maidservant in this passage.
o According to the woman’s viewpoint, whom does she serve?
o According to the elderly man’s view point, whom does he serve?
o According to YHVH’s character and promises, how does the Master of the
universe express HIS evaluation of HIS servants in this passage?
